Cover of "The Wild Mile: Bringing nature back to the city" showing an overhead view of a red kayak traveling on a blue river. The Chicago skyline is reflected in the water. The kayak's wake is green with leaves and flowers. By Alison Pearce Stevens.

Does nature belong in urban spaces? The city of Chicago thinks it does!

Big cities are known for their impressive architecture and bustling activity. But even those with green spaces like parks aren’t particularly known for their wildlife.

Chicago is working to change that.

The eponymous “Wild Mile” is a grassroots project dedicated to turning the North Branch Canal section of the Chicago River from an industrial waterway into a thriving ecosystem of floating islands, dedicated wildlife habitat, and boardwalks that invite the community to experience an explosion of nature in their own neighborhood.
